Hands-On Math: Hundred Charts Course

Elevate Routine Counting into Rich Math Thinking

As teachers, we often assume our students know the hundred chart inside and out. But here’s the challenge: many children simply memorize without truly exploring the patterns hidden inside. Whether it’s counting by 10s, finding 1 more/1 less, or making sense of place value, students may still struggle when the chart is presented in only one familiar way.

This micro course introduces two unconventional layouts of the hundred chart, ones that flip the direction and structure. By shifting the perspective, we give students a fresh lens for seeing relationships in numbers, strengthen their flexibility, and reduce over-reliance on rote memorization.

• Facilitate pattern-finding discussions using layout direction.
• Ask purposeful questions that stretch student thinking.
• Help students visualize movement and relationships in numbers from 1 to 100.
