About this experience

Join CESA 6 Literacy for just one, or both workshops to learn key aspects of science-aligned instruction from our national experts. At each workshop you will have the opportunity to dive deeper into the content with the CESA 6 Literacy team in afternoon break-out sessions offered for both, the elementary and secondary levels.

This workshop series will answer important questions about science-aligned instruction:

  1. How do we support comprehension and knowledge-building through writing and discussion?
  2. What should effective writing instruction include to support both reading and writing?
  3. What instructional processes are effective in building a reading brain?

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Effective Writing Instruction featuring Joan Sedita
(joining virtually)

Date:        January 30, 2025
Time:        8:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Location:  Oshkosh Convention Center*
*
Registrants may elect to participate virtually only for Joan Sedita's keynote presentation.

Description:

Many educators do not recognize that effective writing instruction must address multiple components. An explanation with references to research findings will be provided for each of the five fundamentals of a comprehensive writing curriculum:

  1) Critical Thinking
  2) Syntax
  3) Text Structure
  4) Writing Craft
  5) Transcription

In Joan Sedita's words, "… significant attention is paid to the multi-component nature of skilled reading, while writing tends to be referred to as a single, monolithic skill. I’d like to suggest a model that identifies the multiple components that are necessary for skilled writing... It should be noted that instruction for many skills that support writing also support reading comprehension.”

Join us to learn from Joan and discover strategies to help students K-12 learn to write and write to learn!
